Ignacio Berroa has been recognized as one of the greatest drummers of our times.
He broke cultural and musical barriers as the only non-American—and the first Latino drummer—to carve out a major legacy in a genre long regarded as an American art form.
Ignacio Berroa is a Cuban-born jazz drummer, composer, educator, and author who arrived in the United States in 1980 during the Mariel Boatlift. Shortly after his arrival, he was discovered by legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, who described Berroa as “the only Latin drummer in the world who intimately knows both worlds, jazz and Afro-Cuban music.”
Berroa went on to perform and record internationally with some of the most influential figures in jazz history, including McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, Tito Puente, Clark Terry, Lou Donaldson, Jaco Pastorius, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. His extraordinary ability to merge the sophistication of modern jazz with the depth and authenticity of Afro-Cuban rhythms established him as one of the most respected drummers of his generation.
In addition to his celebrated performing career, Berroa has made lasting contributions as an educator and author. His acclaimed instructional video, Mastering the Art of Afro-Cuban Drumming, along with his books Groovin’ In Clave and A New Way of Groovin’, have become valuable educational resources for drummers and percussionists worldwide.
As a bandleader and recording artist, Berroa has released several highly regarded albums, including Codes, Heritage & Passion, Straight Ahead From Havana and Dizzy Rewired, each reflecting his unique musical voice and deep cultural roots.
Berroa’s contributions to jazz have earned him international recognition, including an award for Outstanding Service to Jazz Education from the International Association for Jazz Education in 1996, a Grammy nomination in 2007 for his album Codes, the Danish Music Award for Best International Jazz Album, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Montreal Drum Festival in 2011, and the LeJENds of Latin Jazz Award presented by the Jazz Education Network in 2022.
Throughout his career, Berroa has performed at major jazz festivals around the world and has presented master classes, residencies, and lectures at leading universities across the United States and Europe.
Continuing to inspire audiences through performance, education, and storytelling, Berroa recently added author to his accomplishments with the release of his memoir, The Path I Chose: My Story, a deeply personal account of his musical journey, struggles, triumphs, and lifelong dedication to the art of jazz and Afro-Cuban music.
Today, Ignacio Berroa remains an internationally recognized ambassador of Afro-Cuban jazz whose artistry, innovation, and educational work continue to influence musicians around the world.
